The first thing I have looked at for my secondary research is RAJAR, more importantly, MIDAS which is a group within RAJAR. It stands for 'Measurement of Internet Delievered Audio Services'. This is incredibly important to research because our show will be broadcast via the internet.
The first thing I have discovered on MIDAS is that broadband internet connection has risen from 51% to 56%, this already means that more people in the world are able to access and enjoy our show with a good quality stream, using this information I believe having cross media is a good idea, such as a webcam because the majority of people will be able to view it smoothly.
I next looked towards the existing listening figures for internet audio. 16.1 millon people claimed to have listened to to radio via the internet, including 15 million listening live and 13.5 million listening at a later time via services such as BBC Iplayer. This information not only justifys our live show, as there is a huge potential audience, but it also supports the argument to archive our show on the Ustream platform once is has been broadcast, so it is accesible to people on demand as this is a very popular feature.
11.6 million claim to listen to live internet radio at least once a week, this is again good news for us as the potential audience for our show is massive, especially as it will only be broadcast live once.
With regard to podcasts, the average podcast user downloads 4 a week and spends just over an hour a week listening, the main positive point of this, for us, is that the most popular podcasts remain music and comedy based, which is the basis of our radio show. Therefore we should possibly look into creating a podcast. Although it may be well recieved at first though, a podcast is possibly not the best idea as our radio show is not sustainable and won't continue for more than the one week.
In conclusion, 31.7% of the adult population (aged 15 or over) have listened to radio via the internet. This means that our target audience does actually listen to internet radio and therefore has the means and accesibililty to listen to our show. 88% of these people also listen from home, we should consider this when creating our content as we wouldn't want to taylor a show for people who are listening from work, because that wouldn't be our audience.
Ustream
Ustream will be the platform that we stream (broadcast) our show off. According to RAJAR the majority of people listen to internet radio via BBC Iplayer (51.4%), obviously we do not have the means to get onto BBC Iplayer so Ustream is our choice. There is still a good number of people that listen to internet radio via other streaming platforms. According to MIDAS on RAJAR, 22.9% of internet radio listeners, listen via another media player, this is our target audience.
Ustream claim that there is over 75,000,000 monthly viewers on their platform, this is good for us and it shows there is clearly an audience out there, we just have to attract it to our show.
