PSB/Comercial Radio

Public service broadcasters or PSB, are normally funded by the public through things like the television license. As a public service broadcaster you must fullfill certain requirements, set by the regulatory body OFCOM. These requirements are for the benefit of the public and include things like the news. An example of a PSB station is BBC Radio One.

Commercial radio is broadcasted by private media groups and is funded through adverts as oppose public funding, it therefore has no requirements to meet and can broadcast content decided by itself. Adverts are the main asthetic difference as these do not appear on PSB. News pieces on commercial radio tend to be slightly more sentationalised, this reason and others including the fact that it does not serve the public mean commercial radio has always been a bit contraversial.  An example of a commercial radio station is Heart FM.
